“The Waves” is considered a masterpiece by Virginia Woolf.
The novel opens with six children playing in a seaside garden and follows them throughout their lives—shaped by friendship, love, and the loss of a friend. In a sequence of fragmented, lyrically condensed monologues, their existence unfolds, while the description of a single day by the sea repeatedly interrupts the voices.

In the dance-theatre performance by Mira Leibold and Moritz Wendler, Woolf’s text is freely interpreted. Alongside the figures from the novel, the motif of the wave itself is explored in particular—as a moving and shaping force that makes rhythm, transformation, and transience tangible. The result is a sensuous, poetic stage world in which questions of identity, time, and finitude move to the foreground.

Mira Leibold

is an actress and theatre-maker. She studied at the Academy of Performing Arts Bavaria, was a permanent ensemble member of the Junge Württembergische Landesbühne, and now works as a freelance artist. In 2023, together with Luzia Oppermann, she developed and performed her first original production, “my best friend – or I await your reply with impatience,” at the Gerhart Hauptmann Theatre Görlitz/Zittau; the piece also guest-performed at the Cammerspiele Leipzig. Mira Leibold lives in Leipzig.

Moritz Wendler

is a contemporary dancer and choreographer based in Leipzig, focusing on an interdisciplinary, improvisation-based practice. He studied at SEAD Salzburg and at the Fontys Academy, with a focus on partner acrobatics. As a performer, he has worked, among others, at the Gerhart Hauptmann Theatre Görlitz-Zittau and in international productions. Since 2023, he has also been active as a choreographer.
